The System

Criteria.

The DGNB does not assess individual measures but instead the overall performance of a building or urban district. The sustained overall performance of a building is assessed on the basis of around 50 different criteria, e.g. Thermal Comfort, Access for All and Noise Protection.

Special DGNB criteria are applied for the certification of urban districts: Change in the City District Climate, Biodiversity and Interaction, Social and Functional Diversity, among others. If these criteria have been clearly met, the building or the urban district is given a certificate/pre-certificate in gold, silver or bronze.

The DGNB is constantly refining its certification system and adapting it to suit national and international standards and legislation.
